I just had a baby a few months ago, so postpartum is fresh on my mind!

The postpartum period is a beautiful yet challenging time for moms. After the excitement of childbirth, your body needs time to heal, adjust, and recover from the physical and emotional changes that come with bringing a new baby into the world.

So in this post, I have gathered the must-have items that made my postpartum recovery smoother, more comfortable, and stress-free.

Let’s get started!

1. Robe

I lived in this robe the first few weeks postpartum because it was so easy to use while my baby and I were still getting the hang of breastfeeding.

2. Gown

I didn’t deliver either of my babies in this gown but it was nice to put on after my first shower at the hospital. I also wore it for my first few days of postpartum.

3. Adult Diapers

These were the most comfortable for me. I would say they run on the smaller side. I am usually a medium but the Small/Medium were way too tight around my thighs, so I ended up getting the Large.

After I first delivered my baby I wore the hospital disposable mesh underwear with an Ice pack pad. I was able to bring a few extra disposable mesh undies home with me. The ice pack pads didn’t fit very well in the diapers, so whenever I needed an ice pack I would use the mesh underwear. Otherwise, I would wear diapers.

4. Postpartum Underwear

Once my bleeding slowed down and I no longer needed the giant pads, I switched to these underwear and just a maxi pad. They don’t have any tummy control, so they may not be a good option for a C-section or if you are looking for tummy control but they are comfortable.

5. Maxi pads

I found these pads the most comfortable. They were soft and pliable.

6. Peri bottle

The hospital will give you a bottle but I would recommend buying one that is angled. It’s a lot less messy and it also folds up, which is nice! Frida mom makes one too but this is the one I used. It was cheaper and it worked great!

7. Ice pack pads

I used the Frida mom brand. They worked well and it’s nice that you don’t have to store them in the freezer. When I had my first child. My nurse brought me a frozen Huggies diaper and it worked super well. So, if you are looking to save some money, you could open up a few diapers, soak them in water and pop them into the freezer.

8. Tucks Pads

These are nice and cooling and help with the healing process down there.

9. Perineal spray

I used Dermoplast and I really liked it but I know there are other sprays out there too. This will also help with the healing process.

10. Button-up pajamas

I highly recommend purchasing a pair of button-up pajamas if you don’t have any already. It is easy to just unbutton the first few buttons and start breastfeeding.

11. Milk catchers

I really like the Haaka Ladybugs. I would put one on the other boob while I was breastfeeding to catch my letdown. I would then freeze my milk and I was able to create a large freezer stash just from catching my letdown.

12. Nipple cream

I like the Earth mama brand.

13. Breast pads

Here is a link to my favorite Disposable breast pads. I tried using the Reusable ones, but I didn’t end up liking them. I can use one pair of disposable breast pads all day long but I had to change out the reusable ones after every feeding because they were soaked.

14. Loose-fitting/comfortable clothing

These joggers are super soft and stretchy. They are great for postpartum or even just lounging around the house.

15. Nursing Bra

Here is a link to the nursing bras that I have worn for the last 3 years. I know Momcozy and Kindred Bravely make nursing bras but it is the same price for 1 bra as it is for a 5 pack of these. The only downside that I have found with them is the pads fall out or get bunched up.

16. Nursing Pillow

Nursing pillows are helpful with getting your newborn to latch. But I still use my nursing pillow and my baby is almost 5 months old. They are also nice for the support even when you are just holding your baby while they nap. I have only ever used the Boppy pillow and I like it, but I have also heard good things about the My Brest Friend Nursing Pillow.

17. Healthy Snacks

I was always hungry when I was freshly postpartum, so I kept protein bars next to my bed and next to the chair that I usually nurse in for a quick snack in the middle of night if I needed one.

18. Water bottle

It is important to stay hydrated, especially if you are breastfeeding. I know I am going to sound pretty cliché but I never go anywhere without my Stanley cup, because I found that it is the easiest cup to keep track of my water intake.

Final Thoughts

Every woman’s postpartum journey is unique, and the essential items you’ll need can vary depending on your delivery experience and personal preferences. However, with the right essentials—comfort items, self-care products, and support—you can ease the transition and focus on what really matters: bonding with your baby and taking care of yourself.

Take it one day at a time, and remember that asking for help and prioritizing your health will go a long way as you recover from childbirth.
